NEW YORK Last week, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Committee approved the construction of a new hotel in SoHo here, according to a report in The New York Times. The 180-room hotel, called The Broadway, is being developed by Andre Balazs, owner of the Mercer Hotel (also in SoHo), and the Chateau Marmont and the Standard, both in Hollywood, CA. His partner in the project is Hines, a Houston-based development firm. The designer of the hotel is French architect Jean Nouvel.

The hotel will be built on a large site, now occupied by a parking lot and flea market on Grand Street between Broadway and Mercer. The Broadway will feature a two-story spa, a garden set two levels below the street, glass elevator cabs, and small retail shops. (4/11/01)
