INDIANAPOLIS, IN–Gensler, the architecture and design firm, worked closely with the Indianapolis Museum of Art in designing the 209-room Alexander, a Dolce Hotel, which officially opened here last week.
More than 50 works by more than 25 contemporary artists have been installed in the public spaces of the hotel, which was developed by the locally-based Buckingham Cos. in a public-private partnership as part of the mixed-use CityWay development. Dolce Hotels & Resorts is managing the hotel.
The artwork included 14 site-specific commissions. Dr. Lisa Freiman, head of the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s contemporary art department, and her team worked with Gensler principal Nancy Nodler on integrating the art program into the overall design.
A highlight of the site-specific installations is Anthem by artist Paul Villinski in the hotel lobby’s living room. It’s a wall piece that incorporates reshapes vinyl records into birds taking flight. (See photograph)
