LAS VEGAS— According to published reports, the Nevada Supreme Court has temporarily blocked a District Courts order authorizing the seizure of $1.9 million from the cage of Binions Horseshoe here in downtown Las Vegas to cover overdue payments to the Fremont Street Experience pedestrian mall. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the court issued an order Friday blocking a January directive from District Judge Gene Porter that allowed the Fremont Street Experience to ask the Clark County sheriff to seize the full amount from Binions Horseshoe as soon as today. Lawyers for the downtown hotel-casino filed a petition Thursday, asking the Supreme Court to overturn Porters ruling because they claim the Fremont Street Experiences operating agreement violates state law. Horseshoe lawyers said allowing seizure of the money would jeopardize the casinos ability to stay open, noting that removal of $1.9 million from the casino cage would place the casinos bankroll below its state-mandated minimum of $1.2 million.
