NEW ORLEANS— Kweisi Mfume, president of the NAACP, has called for “all people of good conscience” to boycott Adam’s Mark Hotels because of alleged discrimination against blacks. In calling for the boycott, Mfume cited a report recently issued by the Florida Commissions on Human Relations which cites incidents of discrimination against blacks at the Adam’s Mark Daytona Beach hotel during the April 1999 Black College Reunion. A federal class-action suit was filed against Adam’s Mark Hotels in Florida by five people who attended the event, and a tentative $8 million settlement was reached with the company. But a federal judge in Florida ruled that the group did not meet the criteria for a class-action suit, making the preliminary settlement moot. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has appealed against the dismissal of the suit and the rejection of the proposed settlement. Oral arguments on the case are set for Monday, July 16, in Atlanta at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. SOURCE: Reuters
