LAGUNA BEACH, CA—Jason Herthel has been appointed president/COO of Montage Hotels & Resorts, a newly created position at the luxury hotel-management company.
With Montage since 2011, Herthel most recently served as EVP/acquisitions, development and strategy.
He will continue to work closely with Alan Fuerstman, Montage Hotels & Resorts’ founder/CEO, on strategic planning and the growth of the company, and will have primary oversight of its key business units, including operations, sales and marketing, acquisitions and development, legal, residential, golf and recently launched lifestyle brand, Pendry Hotels.
“I have known Jason for the past 13 years. He is an exceptionally talented executive who has proven to be a brilliant strategist, has demonstrated extraordinary leadership skills, and has displayed the incredible hospitality instincts that are the foundation of the Montage culture,” stated Fuerstman. “Leadership development and continuity are critical components to a company’s success. I am thrilled to have Jason transition into a broader role as we set forth on creating the next chapters of our company’s story.”
Over the last year, Herthel has led the expansion of the Montage portfolio to include both Montage Kapalua Bay and The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, a Montage Resort and is largely responsible for other projects in the development pipeline, according to the company. Along with Michael Fuerstman, co-founder and creative director of Pendry Hotels, Herthel is helping bring the Pendry brand to fruition with the flagship location opening in San Diego’s Gaslamp District next year.
Said Herthel: “We have a phenomenal team in place and a very bright future ahead. I look forward to working closely with our leadership teams to further the success of our existing business units and, at the same time, continue to offer new destinations for our guests and residents to experience the service for which Montage has become renowned.”
Prior to joining Montage, Herthel was SVP/project development for Viceroy Hotel Group, based in Abu Dhabi. He also worked as principal and general counsel for The Setai Group. Prior to that, Herthel was an attorney with Paul Hastings, specializing in the transactional real estate and business needs of global hospitality clients.
