PITTSBURGH The Convention Center Design Commission, a three-year-old group overseeing the design and construction of the new David L. Lawrence Convention Center, has yet to be told what the adjacent, 500-room hotel will look like, according to local papers here.
The proposed hotel is to be a $100 million, 500-room addition to the existing 611-room Westin Convention Center Hotel Pittsburgh.
The design commission recommends that the city stick with the dramatic concepts proposed two years ago by New York architect Rafael Vinoly. The group said it wanted to retain Vinolys concepts for escalators and elevators at a dramatic Penn Avenue entrance, which would lead up to an elaborate second-floor lobby for the hotel and to a third-floor lobby for the center.
