WASHINGTON, D.C.— Marriott International officially re-flagged Hotel Savery in Des Moines, IA as the Renaissance Savery Hotel on Oct. 14. This newest addition to the Renaissance Hotels, Resorts and Suites portfolio is owned and managed by Shaner Hotel Group of State College, PA. Built in 1919 by James and Annie Savery, the 12-story hotel was the first skyscraper in Des Moines. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and boasts Georgian-revival architecture and encompasses most of a city block. The 224-room hotel offers nearly 15,000 square feet of event space, including 11 meeting rooms, and in 1998 underwent an extensive $9 million renovation. In recent years the hotel’s lobby, meeting space and restaurants have also been refurbished, along with the addition of a new Club Lounge and retail store in the lobby area. Situated in the downtown business district, the Renaissance Savery is five miles from Des Moines International Airport. A three-and-a-half-mile, climate-controlled Skywalk system connects the hotel to downtown businesses, restaurants, and other nearby attractions, including the Des Moines Civic Center, Polk County Convention Complex and the State Capitol building.
