NEW YORK— The UJA-Federation of New York’s Hotel and Hospitality Division honored Philip Maritz, co-founder of Maritz, Wolff & Co., and Jack Shaffer, chairman/Jack A. Shaffer & Company LLC, at its 2002 annual dinner, held here June 5 at the Plaza Hotel. Maritz was recognized for his contribution to the hospitality industry through his work at Maritz Properties and Maritz, Wolff— which owns 50% of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts and a substantial stake in Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. Shaffer was similarly honored for his dedication to the hospitality industry where he has garnered more than 40 years of experience as a real estate investment adviser. Shaffer was integral in the completion of several landmark industry mergers and acquisitions including the Savoy Group acquisition by the Blackstone Group, the Marriott acquisition of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel chain, and the Starwood purchase of CIGA Hotels Europe from ITT Sheraton. Among the industry leaders in attendance was UJA’s Honorary Chair Jonathan Tisch from Loews Hotels, and dinner chairs James Brown of Rosewood, Mark Gordon of Sonnenblick-Goldman Company, and Lewis Wolff of Maritz, Wolff. The evening paid homage to those who have died in terrorist attacks in both New York and Israel, and event’s keynote address recounted several personal stories of Jews who have lost their lives and families at the hands of terrorists. Donations can be made to the UJA’s Israel Emergency Fund in honor Maritz and Shaffer. —Diana M. Rodriguez
