WASHINGTON D.C. Global Vacation Group, Inc., a provider of value-added vacation products and services targeted to higher-income travelers, has announced that Fred Malek has been elected chairman of the board.

Malek is replacing Roger Ballou who has decided to step back from day to day operations to manage his other business interests. Malek is the chairman of Thayer Capital Partners, a Washington D.C.-based private equity firm that focuses on investing in the travel and leisure industries.

Malek was president of Marriott Hotels & Resorts from 1981-1988 and was one of the leaders in the 1988 acquisition of Northwest Airlines. (9/7/00)
