ATLANTA While resorts have been selling merchandise for years, its a relatively new venture for luxury and boutique hotels. But these players are quickly realizing the revenue potential that lies there. Ritz-Carlton expects sales of linens, makeup mirrors, mattresses, and other merchandise to increase 13% this year. The company is now selling such items as cobalt blue goblets for $15 each and lapis and mother-of-pearl caviar serving sets for $425. In March 2001, Omni Hotels plans to repackage its miniature ginseng shampoos and conditioners for sale in hotel gift shops. Meanwhile, the W Hotel in Dunwoody sells throw pillows and artwork. In April 2001, the brand will open its first “W” store in a Chicago hotel. And Westin Hotels may be riding the trend harder than anyone with its all-white “Heavenly Bed, approximately 1,700 of which have been sold to date.
