PARIS— Sofitel, an Accor lodging brand, has set a Spring 2002 opening for the Sofitel St. James London, located at one of the city’s most prestigious addresses on the corner of Waterloo Place and Pall Mall. The 186-room flagship hotel is housed in a beautiful building which once served as the headquarters of a Lloyds Bank subsidiary. First constructed in 1924, the hotel is within walking distance from Piccadilly Circus, the theatres of the West End and the exclusive fashion boutiques of London’s Jermyn Street. The hotel’s 186 rooms include 13 junior suites (larger rooms with a seating area), six suites and one Royal Suite overlooking Waterloo Place; and all rooms will offer internet access via WebTV, and the latest in digital telephone services. Sofitel St. James London will feature eight meeting rooms for up to 200 people as well as two reception areas for up to 160 people. A state-of-the-art boardroom with a private pre-function area and adjoining dining room will accommodate 12. French interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, also credited for designing the Sofitel New York and the new Sofitels in Washington D.C. and Chicago opening next year, has redesigned the building, utilizing a contemporary style that preserves the neo-classic grandeur of the property, while respecting the strong roots of its British culture, said the company. The property even features portraits taken from the former bank boardrooms.
