NEW YORK ExCel, the UK s international exhibition, conference and event center located in London s Docklands, has confirmed the development of six proposed hotels. The projects total 1,219 rooms and represent an investment of more than #400 million, or $578.4 million. The first hotel, a three-star Custom House Hotel, is expected to open later this month. The property, which is being constructed by a private developer known as Lakehurst, will comprise 123 rooms, with a further 156 rooms opening by fall.

Other hotel developments include a #300 million, or $433.8 million project by Marylebone Warwick Balfour, with plans to build three hotels totaling 750 rooms and 150 serviced apartments; a five-star, 57-room designer hotel by developer Snowfield; a 210-room four-star Holiday Inn by Mango Hotels and BDL Hotels; and a 202-room Howard Johnson Hotel as well as 50 serviced apartments by Premier Hotels. None of these hotels are slated to open before the spring of 2002. (3/9/01)
