LONDON— The City of London and Docklands have become the second largest hotel market in the United Kingdom after central London, and has over-taken Heathrow in the number of available rooms, according to new statistics from hotel property consultants Insignia Hotels. Edinburgh and Birmingham have slipped to fourth and fifth place in the U.K. hotel supply rankings. Derek Gammage, managing director of Insignia Hotels, noted, “The growth of hotels in the City of London and in Docklands has overturned traditional views on how the Greater London market is structured.” Gammage added that the City and Docklands now comprise a separate and important travel market, which over the last two and a half years has seen room supply nearly double, from 3,500 to 6,800. “This is across all sectors of the market, with upper-scale hotels such as the Great Eastern and Four Seasons Canary Wharf, with mid-range hotels such as the Novotel at Tower Bridge, to the whole range of budget offerings,” he stated.
