SALT LAKE CITY— With the Winter Olympics just days away, there are still rooms and event tickets to be had here. The big hurdle is lodging costs that soared to alpine heights after corporations reserved 60% of the rooms. For instance, the asking price for a midrange room was about $500 a night with multi-night stays required. But within the past few weeks, lodging prices have been dropping, some by as much as 50%. Recently $500 rooms have dropped to $385, and some Olympic travelers are holding out for rates to drop to $150. “This is a pattern that happened in other Olympic cities, as well,” said Jason Mathis, director/communications for the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau. “There are still about 1,000 rooms available. It fluctuates hour by hour.” The fluctuation is due to rooms being made available as corporations let some go. For people with cars, there are lower-end motel rooms for $75-$110 in towns 10-45 minutes driving time from the city. A midrange motel in Sandy has a room for $182, and some condominiums in Snowbird dropped from $300 to $160. SOURCE: The Press-Enterprise, Riverside, CA
