NEW YORK— Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts’ new hotel in Khao Lak, near Phuket, Thailand, suffered damage as a result of the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami in south Asia and will remain closed until further notice. A company team has flown to Khao Lak to access the situation. The ground floor, villas and the property’s private beach villas all suffered severe damage. A spokesperson for the resort said the hotel’s main structure has not been severely damaged but a full assessment is expected to take weeks. Khao Lak is one of the worst affected areas in Thailand and communication with Khao Lak remains very difficult, according to the company. Le Méridien Hotels and Resorts has confirmed, however, that its staff there is working with local authorities and tour operators to arrange for guests to be transferred to other hotels and returned home as soon as possible The hotel group also is arranging to provide assistance to its staff members and their families living in the affected coastal areas around Phuket and Khao Lak.
