NEW YORK Kempinski, the luxury hotel company that operates 26 hotels, predominantly in Europe, has confirmed its interest in further expansion in the Middle East. At present, the company operates just one hotel on the continent: the 187-room Ajman Kempinski Hotel Resort, which opened in 1998. A management contract has recently been signed to operate a new hotel in Cairo; meanwhile, negotiations are taking place for further agreements to manage hotels in Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and El Guna. Furthermore, Kempinski has identified Abu Dhabi, Jeddah and Tehran as possible future expansion locations. According to Christopher Hartley, Kempinski s vp/marketing, if suitable opportunities arise, the company will consider equity stakes and not simply management contracts.
