KANSAS CITY, MO— A proposal to build a $300 million convention hotel here has begun moving through the local municipal government approval process. If approved, the 900 room to 1,000-room downtown hotel would begin construction by 2011-2012 and be completed by 2013-2014, by which time the current national economic downturn is expected to have rebounded. The convention business in particular has suffered in recent months as corporations have cut back on their large off-site meetings in response to the weak economy. No architect, brand, or operator have yet been identified for the proposed hotel. According to local press reports, the project would be a public-private partnership, a popular funding vehicle for such projects in that it minimizes the burden on taxpayers.
