NEW YORK— More leisure travelers are turning to private planes to avoid the fears and inconveniences many people now associate with commercial flights, according to a New York Times report. Charter companies report business has boomed since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, with the most notable increases for leisure travel by families and small groups that had never considered private planes before. New inquiries are up about 40%, mostly on the East Coast and West Coast, the report said, and noted there is also more interest in charter flights in the Midwest. In addition to being more convenient, chartering a plane can be less expensive for a group flying first class. The report cited a group of six people from New York who chartered a Lear jet for a weekend trip to Montreal. The cost of the charter was $6,000 round trip, less expensive per person than the approximately $1,155 United Airlines currently charges for a non-stop flight to Montreal in first class.
