BOSTON- The Howard Johnson name returned to its birthplace this week, with the opening of a 132-room Howard Johnson Hotel in Boston Bayside- at exact site along Morrissey Boulevard where the original Howard Johnsons roadside restaurant welcomed its first hungry customers in 1935. The 39-year-old Boston native, Howard Dearing Johnson established his first business, an apothecary in Quincy, MA, with a soda fountain that served three flavors of ice cream. He later expanded into the hotel business, and opened the first Howard Johnson motel in 1954. The new five-story Howard Johnson Hotel- Boston Bayside features an executive floor, high-speed Internet access and voice mail in all rooms, as well as Howard Johnson Home Office rooms. The opening will mark the 75th anniversary of the hotels owner and operator, Phillips Family Properties of Boston. (11/9/00)
