NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY The Institute of Travel, Hotel and Restaurant Administration at Niagara University has had its status upgraded to the college level.
The move means the learning institute will now operate under the moniker of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management and that Niagara s hospitality college is just one of five colleges of hospitality and tourism operating in the United States.
Niagara first established its hospitality and tourism program in 1968. It has broadened its curriculum since then to now include programs on management, food service management, tourism marketing, and recreation and sports management. An entrepreneurship program for people who want to be owners is being developed, as are other programs reflecting the diversity of the industry, said Gary Praetzel, Ph.D., dean of the college.
The college s offices will be moved to St. Vincent s Hall on Niagara s campus. The hall, which is undergoing a $10.5 million renovation, will replace temporary offices located adjacent to the campus.
Plans to develop the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management have attracted more than $3 million in private grant support, according to Niagara University officials. The Statler Foundation has committed $1.525 million for facilities for the hospitality program and the Oishei Foundation has pledged $1.5 million for curriculum enhancements, marketing, and for the creation of the Center for Community Economic Development Through Hospitality and Tourism. The center will provide a range of services to the hospitality industry, including help for struggling businesses. (2/21/01)
