NEW YORK— The quest for quality insight and advice about how best to mount “The Quest for Quality Employees” found several dozen International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show attendees learning that— despite their best efforts— there is no hard and fast guarantee they will find the right person for the right job…and keep them for any appreciable length of time. As noted by Dr. Marc Clark CHA/CHRE, of M. Douglas Clark & Associates, when beating the bushes for quality— and qualified— help, hospitality industry recruiters are likely to find: “20% [of those ultimately hired]turn out to be career-minded; 38% can best be classified as ‘undecided’ about the direction of the professional calling; 22% are merely ‘passing through’ en-route to some other commercial calling; and 20% are outright ‘misplaced’ [i.e. they don’t belong in this industry at all].” Moreover, session attendees were reminded that recruiting is only half of the solution to their respective organizations’ labor problems; the other side of the coin is retaining those who have proven their value to the company and its operations.—Michael Billig
