HOUSTON, TX— The Hilton Americas– Houston Hotel, scheduled to open in November of 2003, has successfully finished one of the largest concrete foundation mats ever poured in Houston. Turner Construction Company, the general contractor for the Hilton Americas – Houston, employed more than 100 trucks and eight stationary concrete pumpers to complete the pour, which took approximately 24 hours. The typical foundation on a new home is approximately six inches deep, however, the finished seven-foot deep foundation for the Hilton Americas-Houston will span two square city blocks. The pour required 13,000 cubic feet of concrete, enough to pave a 19-mile sidewalk. The 1,200 room Hilton Americas – Houston, which will be Houstons largest convention hotel, is being built in tandem with the expansion of the George R. Brown Convention Center, in which the two facilities will be connected via skywalks. This joint venture, in conjunction with the building of a new sports arena, will help position Houston more favorably when competing for large national conventions.
