NEW YORK– Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. flipped the switch on its new Direct FuelCell power plant here at the 1,750-room Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers. Installation of the power plant, which utilizes fuel cell technology, was just completed by PPL Corporation. There are now three Sheratons with DFC power plants. The previous two installations occurred at the Sheraton Edison Hotel in Edison, NJ; and the Sheraton Parsippany in Parsippany, NJ. The next installation will occur at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina in San Diego later this year. These fuel cell installations are a part of a master agreement between PPL and Starwood that could lead to future installations. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority contributed $920,000 to the Sheraton New York’s power plant installation. The 250-kilowatt DFC power plant is designed to provide about 10% of the hotel’s electricity and hot water and will be able to supply back-up electricity for a portion of the hotel. PPL will own, operate and maintain the power plant. PPL is the distribution partner for FuelCell Energy Inc., which manufactured the power plant. The DFC power plant generates electricity with no combustion and uses natural gas that will be supplied at the Sheraton New York by Consolidated Edison. Trystate Mechanical Inc., a PPL mechanical contracting subsidiary, worked on the power plant installation at the hotel.
