ASHEVILLE, NC— As the industry continues to recover from the slumping economy and post-Sept. 11 effects, Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa reported it posted record numbers for the first quarter, edging out its previous best of first-quarter 1998. According to Jay Boyd, director of marketing, first-quarter gross operating profit was positive for the first time in the history of the 510-room hotel, a member of Historic Hotels of America. Comparisons of the two record quarters shows in 2002, there was a 4% occupancy gain over 1998 to 67.5%, with ADR 25% higher at $127.57 and RevPAR soaring 46% to $214.42. Boyd cited the addition of a 40,000-square-foot, $40 million spa in February 2001 as a key driver of the record numbers, along with an expansion of the property’s sports complex and renovations of guestrooms and public spaces.
