LAKE COMO, ITALY—Grand Hotel Tremezzo is opening for the season following a multi-year renovation that includes new lakeview rooms, an historical suite and the culinary residency of Chef Gualtiero Marchesi.
With 30 newly renovated Lake View Prestige Rooms and the new signature historic Suite Aurelia, this season sees the culmination of a three-year renovation that has transformed this 92-room palace and Lake Como icon. From the wrought-iron balconies that offer water views to the custom furniture created by local artisans with accents in silk from the region, the redone rooms are infused with a sense of place, according to the company. The owning family individually chose pieces of Verona marble for each bathroom and custom designed their own furniture inspired by ancestral heirlooms.
The historic Suite Aurelia pays homage to one of the hotel’s grand dames, a member of the owning family who is celebrating her 90th birthday this year. The new suites features antiques from her own collection, including an 18th century oil painting, writing desk and Baroque mirror. Suite Aurelia is the fourth historic suite that the hotel has added in its collection, each one celebrating “Great Ladies” who have graced the property, including Suite Greta, named for Greta Garbo, who mentions the hotel in her famous movie “Grand Hotel.”
The 2014 season’s finishing touches build upon last year’s introduction of the hotel’s eight new Rooftop Suites, each offering a private terrace and outdoor heated Jacuzzi. Guests of the Rooftop Suites also enjoy private butler service and all eight suites can be combined to create a rooftop penthouse.
In addition to the renovation, guests and locals alike can now gather at any one of the hotel’s five restaurants to enjoy the award-winning Italian cuisine of Chef Gualtiero Marchesi. Since taking permanent residency next to Executive Chef Osvaldo Presazzi, Chef Marchesi’s signature dishes also have a new home at La Terrazza Restaurant.
The hotel’s makeover also includes the updated T Spa in collaboration with ESPA, featuring The T Spa Suite with a private couple’s massage room. The T Spa Suite is outfitted with a whirlpool tub, sauna and steam bath with contrast shower and cascade jets.
Originally built in 1910 in Art Nouveau style, Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts.
