New York— A Manhattan bar and lounge is holding a fundraiser to benefit families of uninsured hospitality workers impacted by the World Trade Center attacks. The FLÛTE Flatiron bar and lounge at 40 East 20th Street will host the event on Tuesday, October 9 from 6 p.m to 10 p.m. FLÛTE will donate proceeds from the cash bar and is requesting a $20 donation at the door. Executive Chef Tom Kukoly will be preparing dishes from FLÛTEs “cuisine de bar” menu which will be served free of charge to donors. Funds raised will go to the Asociacion Tepeyac De New York, a charity specifically benefiting uninsured families. A representative of the charity will be there to answer questions. “When I first suggested holding a fundraiser for the uninsured, I was shocked that some people tried to discourage me,” said FLÛTE co-owner Hervé Rousseau. “Food and beverage workers are invisible to many, but we feel their loss and their families desperately need our help, so we are going ahead with it.” Numerous restaurants, cafeterias and delis catered to World Trade Center workers in and around the twin towers. Among the missing in the tragedy are kitchen workers, cleaners, waitstaff and deliverymen. Some of the workers who made it out safely now find that they dont have jobs because of the financial losses suffered by businesses in the disaster area, or because their workplace simply no longer exists. “The financial impact is devastating to those who dont have resources in times of crisis,” said FLÛTE co-owner Arun Dhingra. “We have to help because these families are part of our family.”
