OAKLAND, CA— Homewood Suites by Hilton has completed and opened its first conversion project: a 140-suite Homewood property here. Owned by Oakland Hospitality and operated under a franchise agreement with Promus Hotels, the franchise subsidiary of Hilton Hotels Corp., the new three-story Homewood Suites by Hilton Oakland – Waterfront is situated just off the 880 freeway and was originally intended to be an extended-stay product prior to being converted before actual construction began. As noted by Jim Holthouser, svp/brand management for Homewood Suites by Hilton: “Recently, we have been approached by a number of existing owners of non-Homewood extended-stay hotels who want to participate in the brand’s growth and success. After careful consideration, we have modified our strategy to very selectively allow conversions of existing hotels to Homewood Suites by Hilton hotels with a goal of accepting a limited number of conversions.” Holthouser added: “It gives the development community another opportunity to participate in a growing Hilton brand that has a strong appeal with extended-stay travelers.” Moreover, he noted “the conversion was enhanced by the willingness of the franchisee to meet— and sometimes exceed— our Homewood Suites by Hilton standards.
