STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN— The first Hilton in Sweden— Hilton Stockholm Slussen— is set to open Feb. 21, marking the chain’s entry into the country. According to the company, it plans to open a minimum of four Hiltons in Sweden this year. Hilton Stockholm Slussen will be a 290-room business hotel, and will include ”Hilton Breakfast,” ”Hilton Meetings,” 24-hour room service, business and executive floor accommodations, restaurants and bars. London-based Hilton Group plc, which acquired Scandic Hotels in June 2001, now intends to establish itself as a significant player within the Nordic hotel market by opening some 20 to 25 Hilton hotels within the next three years. Most of these will be Scandic Hotels chosen for their location and existing standards, and will be improved and rebranded as Hiltons. David Michels, group chief executive, Hilton Group plc, said, “Hilton hotels are always situated in locations identified as key to our customers, where business deals are done and important decisions are made. The establishment of Hilton in Stockholm, and eventually in several other Swedish cities, adds an important destination to the Hilton estate and, in turn, to our customers.” The Scandic brand will be maintained, and the rebranding will allow Hilton to cover the market with two different brands. With more than 130 properties, Scandic Hotels offers mid-market hotels. There are 15 Scandic Hotels in Stockholm, six in Gothenburg and four in Malmö. The first Hilton to open in the Nordic region is the Hilton Copenhagen Airport. Hilton Stockholm Slussen’s general manager Craig Gardner said guests to the property will notice distinctive changes in service and appearance levels. “More than 100 business and executive rooms will be partially renovated, although they will retain the wood paneling that gives them a Nordic feel. An executive lounge also will be built adjacent to these rooms,” said Craig Gardner. Hilton Stockholm Slussen also will provide the “Hilton Meetings” concept, which offers the latest technology, including the ability for each participant to connect to a network or the Internet. A business center is adjacent.
