Fairmont Continues To Lock Out Toronto Union Workers

TORONTO— Over 100 workers of the Sheraton Four Points Toronto Airport Area have been locked out since August 3, 2001 by owners and operators of Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, because the Hotel Employees, Restaurant Employees International (HERE) Union Local- 75 workers are fighting their second collective agreement with the hotel over employee benefits. As previoulsy reported, bargaining with Fairmont broke down as a result of the companys final offer, which attempts to place a freeze on health and welfare benefits, continues to exclude part-timer employees from the benefit plan, denies wage adjustments for low wage workers, denies wage increases comparable to union standards on the airport strip, allows management to do bargaining unit work, and allows contracting out. According to HERE, the hotel did not notify guests of its plans to lock out workers, and management has performing the tasks generally performed by the union employees.
