TAOS, NM— El Monte Sagrado Resort will open to the public here on July 1. Billed as a luxury eco-resort,” El Monte Sagrado is a place that combines ecological preservation with a “sublime getaway experience, according to founder Tom Worrell Jr. A grand opening party took place on June 21 with Worrell presiding and several celebrity guests in attendance including New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, Goldie Hawn, Shirley MacLaine, Gloria Estefan, Kevin Richardson of the Backstreet Boys and Spanish-language talk show host Christina Saralegui. Owned and operated by Dharma Living Resorts, the new resort has 37 suites. The suites have various themes and sizes including pueblo-themed junior suites and larger, one and two-bedroom suites with global themes such as Tibet, Bali or Morocco. The larger accommodations have hand-painted and textured walls, authentic furniture and native artifacts from their respective region. Also available are 12 off-site casitas, which sleep between two and eight guests. These accommodations are renovated, historical landmark guest homes within walking distance of Taos galleries, art museums, restaurants and shops. El Monte Sagrado features De La Tierra restaurant under the direction of Executive Chef Johnny Vinczencz. Meals are prepared using exotic fruits and herbs grown on the property as well as goods from local farmers. For spa-goers, there is Detlev’s, a “rejuvenation center” offering acupuncture, tarot, astrological and psychic readings, in addition to massages and body treatments. El Monte Sagrado was built to preserve and sustain the land it resides on, according to Worrell. From the building materials chosen to create the foundation, to the water flowing throughout the water gardens, conservation is a top priority at El Monte Sagrado, he indicated. Dharma Living Resorts also owns and operates El Monte Casitas in Taos and the Sundy House Resort in Delray Beach, FL.
