STURBRIDGE, MA— William (Bill) Clifford has signed on as innkeeper and general manager of the Publick House Historic Inn and Country Motor Lodge, returning to the property at which he began his lodging and hospitality industry career. Clifford started at the Publick House as a busboy and continued working through his high school and college years in the restaurant. Following a tour of duty in the armed forces, he returned to the Publick House as a manager-in-training and then as assistant innkeeper with Treadway Inns (owner and operator of the facility at that time). Clifford continued his career with Treadway Inns as innkeeper of the Lord Jeffery Inn in Amherst and then the Treadway Inn in Binghamton, NY. After that, he worked for Rodeway Inns at O’Hare Airport as well as at locations in Indiana, Ohio and Texas, working his way up to senior vp/human resources and regional director of operations of Richfield Hospitality Services. Most recently, Clifford was the interim general manager of the Mendocino Hotel in Mendocino, CA, the Dimond Center Hotel in Anchorage, AK, and the Heritage House Inn in Little River, CA. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Publick House was established on the Sturbridge Common in 1771 by Colonel Ebenezer Crafts.
