City Council In NC Debates New Convention Center

CHARLOTTE, NC Charlotte City Council members want to dispose of the old convention center land, a city-owned uptown block that has sat vacant since the building closed in 1995. But at a council meeting on December 11, Mayor Pat McCrory and several council members seemed content to let the prime 3.3 acres sit quietly somewhat longer. Since the council voted last month to scrap its crumbling deal with Pennsylvania-based LCOR, which had agreed to buy the land for hotels, offices and apartments, the city staff has studied other options for the parcel. The council is now considering several options, which include selling it, keeping it as is, planting grass and building a park, or developing it as something other than a convention center/hotel project.
