TORONTO— Le Royal Meridien King Edward hotel kicked off its centennial celebrations this month with a year-long schedule of events and programs that will celebrate its opening back on May 11, 1903. Among the initiatives the Edwardian-style hotel has planned are: the “King Eddy” Museum, an on-site museum showcasing artifacts and antiquities from the hotel; tea and tram tours that feature hotel history, neighborhood history and Toronto history; a traditional 1903 holiday celebration; and a 100th anniversary celebration week set for next year, May 5 to 11, 2003. The historic landmark hotel— which was the creation of developer George Gooderham and Toronto architect E.J. Lennox— will also receive 165 Art + Tech rooms and suites featuring 42-inch plasma-screen TVs. (The Art + Tech concept was launched last fall by Le Meridien.) Showrooms highlighting the new set of rooms the hotel will receive will be available for viewing this July, noted the property.
