WASHINGTON, DC— Card check reemerged this week in Congress when a new version of the controversial Employee Free Choice Act was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. The lodging industry, represented by the American Hotel & Lodging Association, and other industries strongly oppose the proposed measure because the card check provision eliminates the private ballot in union elections. The AH&LA also objects to mandatory arbitration provisions contained in the bill. During last years presidential election, then candidate Barack Obama indicated he would sign the legislation, if he were elected. In the intervening months, opponents of the bill have strongly stated their case and its not clear what position the President now takes. The AH&LA recommends that members of the lodging industry waste no time in making their feelings known to their legislators in Congress.
