LONDON The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Britain s tourism industry, facing some losses due to the foot-and-mouth crisis, is readying plans for a marketing counter-offensive to sell the U.K. as a bargain vacation destination. The plan, called Great Value Britain, is expected to include hotel discounts of as much as 50% at major chains with properties in London and areas of the countryside affected by the travel restrictions to combat the foot-and-mouth outbreak.
Final details haven t been worked out yet, and the plan won t launch until the crisis is stabilized, officials said. This week airline officials and chief executives from hotel chains including Marriott, Hilton, Forte, Accor and Bass were meeting to discuss how to coordinate vacation packages and “strategic pricing” to encourage tourists to come to Britain.
