WASHINGTON, DC— As part of Groundhog Job Shadow Day Feb. 1, J.W. “Bill Marriott Jr., Marriotts chairman/CEO, will conduct an inspection of the Bethesda Marriott Suites hotel with four local high school students. “Its great that young people are eager to learn more about our business and its career opportunities,” said Marriott. “It gives us the chance to showcase excellent career choices within the lodging industry and to have the students talk first-hand with our experienced employees.” As a part of the chain’s ongoing “Spirit to Serve Our Communities program, students will be introduced to all areas of operation at Marriott hotels, including the kitchen, housekeeping, sales, front desk and engineering. They will also learn from Marriotts senior executives about the hospitality industry and meet with Marriott ‘mentors’ to discuss career opportunities. A study by Kravis Leadership Institute in Southern California shows that students who job shadow are more likely to finish high school and obtain a four-year degree. Marriotts National Groundhog Job Shadow Day initiative, part of Marriotts support of Americas Promise-The Alliance For Youth, will introduce 25,000 students to the lodging industry over five years through job shadow, internships and other youth career development programs. To further support this initiative, Marriott has established partnerships with the National Academy Foundation, Junior Achievement and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). These partnerships facilitate Marriotts involvement in helping develop young people for careers in the hospitality industry. Additional Washington, DC, area hotels participating in Job Shadow Day include: JW Marriott Hotel, Marriott at Metro Center, Marriott Wardman Park, Renaissance Mayflower, Renaissance Washington, D.C., Washington Marriott and Greenbelt Marriott.
