BEVERLY HILLS, CA— Plans for this citys first new luxury hotel in more than 10 years is causing a buzz here, according to a Reuters report. Mandarin Oriental, Ritz-Carlton, Rosewood and Bulgari, are some of the brands vying for the property, which would be located near Rodeo Drive on Canon Drive, said the report. The hotel, which would be about 220 rooms, would be Beverly Hills’ first new five-star establishment since the Peninsula opened in the early 1990s. It would also join the Regent Beverly Wilshire— model for the hotel where Richard Geres character stays in the film “Pretty Woman”—as only the second hotel within easy walking distance of the citys business and entertainment core. The projects developer is the Phoenix-based Athens Group, which confirmed it was working with the city on the project but was reluctant to talk in detail about the deal.
