CORAL GABLES, FL— Spillis Candela DMJM has completed its design of the 112-suite Sandy Lane Hotel in Barbados. Since 1997 Spillis Candela DMJM has served as the architectural and engineering firm for the $300 million development, which included demolition of the former hotel, an identical re-construction of the principal buildings, the addition of new guest wings and a 45,000-square-foot spa. The renovation began with the main building which houses the lobby, restaurants, lounges, retail shops and guestrooms. Each guestroom suite features large baths, private bars, large verandahs and living areas, plus plasma, flat-screen TVs, DVD and CD players, fax machines, Internet access, and electronic keypads that control temperature, lighting, security and privacy. Spillis Candela DMJM designed the building to look like the ruins of an old sugar mill— a familiar historical structure on the island— and the hotel features traditional Bajan architecture. The façade of this building is a replica of the original rendered in sandy-hued coral stone. The international design team on this project included Spillis Candela DMJM, Richmond International (interior design), Edward Stone and Associates (EDSA) (landscape design), Cloward Associates (pool design), Tom Fazio (design and creation of 45 holes of championship golf), and Architect Larry Warren (the Barbados-based design consultant).
