NEW YORK— Arthur Backal will direct catering and social event operations at the new Mandarin Oriental New York. The 251-room hotel is slated to open later this year. A 20-year veteran of the hospitality industry, Backal was director of catering for The Pierre here prior to his appointment. Also, he served with the St. Regis, The Palace and The Plaza hotels in New York. Mandarin Oriental operates 18 hotels around the world and has four additional hotels in development. In addition to the New York property, it is developing hotels in Washington, D.C. (opening 2004); Hong Kong (2005); and Tokyo (2006).
