Are Las Vegas Resorts Conserving Energy?

LAS VEGAS— The unveiling of a $10 million marquee at Bally’s was postponed following the rolling blackouts that the area experienced earlier in the week. In addition, the Bellagio has curtailed its daily water show presentations and Mandalay Resort Group has ordered employees to turn off lights and raise air conditioner settings at its hotel-casinos. Las Vegas casino companies have reportedly cut their energy consumption over the last several months, however, the new marquee at Bally’s is not representative of this as it will use 259 kilowatts of power during peak periods— the same amount of electricity employed by about 52 homes. It will be unveiled July 7.
