WASHINGTON, DC— An initiative to set up a fund to promote travel within and to the United States is expected to rank high on the agenda of hoteliers at next month’s fifth annual American Hotel & Lodging Association Legislative Action Summit here. During the course of lobbying members of Congress on issues of importance to the lodging and hospitality industry, AH&LA conference delegates would ostensibly be hammering home the point that a program encompassing the disbursement of federal funds to supplement existing state tourism promotion expenditures would significantly leverage state efforts in this area. It was suggested that one legislative vehicle that would provide funding for travel marketing is The American Travel Promotion Act (H.R.3321), introduced by Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL). The bill would reportedly provide $100 million to supplement state government travel promotion expenditures.
